Thierry Henry
Design a social media post and a concept for a Netflix original paying homage to your sporting hero.
Appreciation of a King
I chose to go with a glitch effect design for my submissions due to the reflection of Thierry Henry’s electrifying pace during his Arsenal career. Famously known for leaving opponents behind, it felt right to pay homage to this. Also, the glitch adds a disruptive effect, something that encapsulates the seriousness and emotion of a footballer. The glitch is something that is very commonly used in sports marketing to grab the attention of the youth, who always strive to be socially disruptive. The crown used on Henry’s head pays homage to his nickname as the “King of Highbury” a stadium where he built his reputation as one of the best footballers on the planet. The quote was one of his, and it reflects the love and passion he has for Arsenal. Arsenal is his paradise, his playground and somewhere that he will keep in his heart for the rest of his life. It felt right to show this connection between a man and the club that made him who he is today. The fact that the quote spoke about making history, it only felt right to list a few of his achievements that he made at Arsenal, just to show the history that he did actually make whilst at the club. The electric blue reflects the shade of blue of the away kit that Arsenal donned that season, a kit that Henry scored his last ever goal for Arsenal in.
A Netflix Original
The Netflix thumbnail also used this design, accompanied with an organic logo and unique name. Rather than call it something named after the man himself, I went for the more abstract choice of using his iconic squad number instead, a number that’s deeply embedded in the hearts of all Arsenal fans around the world. Using the term “fourteen” felt a little more authentic and personal rather than using just his name. The logo, appreciating Henry’s iconic knee side celebration, a celebration that is cast in bronze outside the Emirates Stadium. The synopsis is a small snippet of the commentary that Jon Champion used when Henry scored that famous comeback goal against Leeds. A truly iconic piece
of commentary to match a truly magical moment in the FA Cup. The King was back, and after 226 goals he wasn’t finished there. He had unfinished business...
